Glen Moray 12 Year Old - 40%

From the distillery website

A whisky with a long heritage, beautifully balancing vanilla and berried notes, this quintessential Speysider reflects all our expertise. It is distilled on the banks of the River Lossie where we have been making Glen Moray since 1897. This single malt is entirely aged in carefully selected American oak casks to bring out its traditional Speyside character.

Tasting notes:

Appearance: Old gold in colour, forms a thin line which beads before gradually falling as thick, oily legs

Nose: Orchard fruit, fresh summer herbs, heather, vanilla cream, and soft caramel

Palate: A little thin on the mouthfeel. Vanilla and caramel at first, followed by stewed apple, dried apricot, banana shortbread and subtle oak spice

Finish: Nutty oak, heather honey, and milk chocolate buttons

Overall: This is a whisky that sits fairly and squarely in the affordable, easy drinker category. It suffers a little from the low abv, particularly with the mouthfeel which feels a little thin. It’s not hugely complex but, at a current price of £40-45, it’s a decent introductory whisky. However, in terms of quality and bang for the buck I think it’s worth foregoing the age statement and delving into bottlings in their Cask Xperience range, including Phoenix Rising and Forbidden Fruit.
