Glen Moray Phoenix Rising - 40%

From the distillery

It has been more than 120 years since we first began crafting Glen Moray in the heart of Speyside, and our rich heritage continues to inspire our single malt Scotch whisky today. This special edition is a smooth, balanced whisky, finished in new charred oak casks for notes of soft caramel and inviting spice.

Tasting notes

Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thin line which quickly beads before falling as slow, oily legs.

Nose: Cadburys Caramel chocolate, vanilla, mild grassiness and a soft hint of coconut cream and oak spice.

Palate: Soft, creamy mouthfeel. Stewed apple, juicy raisins, caramel sauce, vanilla cream, milky coffee, Brandy Snap biscuits and oak spice.

Finish: Prickly pepper on the tip of the tongue which dissipates quickly to leave soft notes of Macadamia nuts, caramel, Ovaltine and mildly drying oak.

Summary: Great mouthfeel, good complexity, plenty of flavour, lovely balance and a price point of around £30, it’s hard to find a fault with this one. You could argue a higher abv would be great, but that would also have a detrimental effect on the price. I thought the Twisted Vine was good value for money, but for me this one really is worth spending just a little bit more.
