Casks of Lindores STR Wine Barrique - 49.4%
From the distillery website
The second “Casks of Lindores” bottling features exclusively STR Wine Barriques, one of the three core cask types used at Lindores and will again be sold exclusively through selected stockists.
Matured exclusively in Shaved, Toasted and Recharred Red Wine Barriques from Spain. This Lindores Single Malt is bottled onsite at our unique Limited-Edition strength of 49.4% ABV.
Tasting notes
Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thin line which beads before very slowly falling as thin, oily legs.
Nose: Overripe apples and pears, kiwi fruit, apricot jam, butterscotch, vanilla and cinnamon
Palate: Sweet entrance becoming slightly bitter as a dark treacle note appears. Stewed plums and custard, cinnamon, ginger, red berries, a touch of blackberry and pleasant oak char. With a few drops of water, caramel and more sweet, stewed fruit appear.
Finish: Sweet, nutty oak, slightly astringent, cinnamon and ginger. Water lengthens the finish and brings Demerara sugar and a hint of mocha.
Overall: A light, easy drinking whisky where the use of STR wine barriques has brought more fruitiness when compared to the Bourbon cask expression. It’s another interesting bottling from the distillery and, as with the others in the Casks of Lindores series, displays a maturity which belies it’s relatively tender years.
Current retail price is £52 which isn’t excessive, however my preference would be to spend a little more and go for the Sherry Cask expression.
