Royal Lochnagar Distillery Exclusive Bottling Batch #02 - 48%
This distillery exclusive bottling has been created by a vatting of European oak casks in heavily charred Muscat seasoned casks.
Tasting notes
Appearance: Honey gold in colour, forms a thin line which falls slowly as thick, oily legs
Nose: Citrus fruit peel, honey, hay and mild maltiness
Palate: Creamy mouthfeel with a prickle of alcohol. Orange and lemon citrus, sultanas, crème brûlée, oak spice and a subtle hint of cask char
Finish: Honey, cinnamon and black pepper
Overall: Light and summery, medium sweet with just a hint of spice. Despite no age statement, it’s similar in many ways to the 12 year old bottling, with the influence of the charred Muscat seasoned casks bringing more sweetness, mild smoke and citrus notes. It’s a very pleasant, enjoyable whisky although lacking in anything that really makes it stand out from the crowd.
Price is £95, reflecting the distillery exclusive nature but, for me anyway, it feels a little on the expensive side.
