Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Pale gold, forms a thin line which beads before slowly falling as thick, oily legs.
Nose: Robust yet soft peat smoke, vanilla cream, malted milk biscuits, Heather honey, salty coastal air and a touch of oak spice.
Palate: Creamy mouthfeel. Bonfire smoke with a mild medicinal note, malt, maritime saltiness, vanilla, milk chocolate nibs, lemon citrus, woody oak spices and peppery heat. A few drops of water temper the heat and brings intensely creamy, vanilla-laced chocolate malted milk.
Finish: Delicate smoke lingers on the palate as the creamy vanilla comes to the fore, together with astringent nutty oak, malt and a slowly building chilli heat.
Overall: Unexpectedly different to the standard 46% Allt Gleann, but no less enjoyable especially with a little water. The smoke is there but is still gentle enough to allow the character of the spirit to shine through.
Another in the Legacy series, so it's perhaps unsurprising that this is far from being the finished article. There's a definite youthfulness about this expression, but this is a whisky which is there to shine a light on the shape of things to come.
Currently priced at around £75, which could be viewed as maybe a little expensive for such a young whisky. However, it does weigh in at a very healthy 61.1% so perhaps not too bad in the current market.
