Torabhaig Allt Gleann - 46%

From the Distillery

Our second release in The Legacy Series, Allt Gleann is named after one of two burns that feed the distillery. An evolution on the 2017 inaugural release, Allt Gleann introduces Laureate malted barley alongside Concerto, Safspirit M-1 yeast alongside Pinnacle MG+, and re-fill whisky barrels in maturation alongside first-fill bourbon barrels. There is a little more peat and added complexity compared to the 2017 inaugural release, elegantly showcasing the evolution of our spirit.

Tasting notes

Appearance: Pinot Grigio in colour, forms a thin line which beads before slowly falling as thin, oily  legs.

Nose: Sweet, slightly medicinal peat smoke, apple blossom, vanilla, malt, Heather honey and salty sea breeze.

Palate: Creamy mouthfeel. Crème pâtissière made with Madagascan vanilla pods, fresh green apple leading into stewed apple, and honey interlaced with soft peat smoke. Just a hint of peppery warmth.

Finish: Delicate smoke lingers on the palate together with creamy vanilla, lemon citrus, malt and that prickle of peppery spice which slowly builds together with nutty, slightly astringent oak.

Overall: A very enjoyable dram, although its relative youth is still apparent it manages to feel that little bit more complex and refined than the 2017 release. It’s still early days for Torabhaig, but these initial releases certainly give a promising glimpse into future offerings.

Priced at around £58 it’s a little on the expensive side for one so young. As a stand-alone whisky I would struggle to justify buying a bottle, but this is one of those expressions that exists to give you an idea of the path the distillery is taking and how the spirit is evolving over time.
