Glen Moray Elgin Classic Sherry Cask Finish - 40%
From the distillery website
Our sherry cask finish richly illustrates our expertise in finishing, a skill we've been honing for many years. We begin by maturing our spirit in American oak casks for our traditional Speyside style then we finish in Oloroso sherry casks, sourced from Jerez in Spain to add notes of dried fruity, nuts and spice. A whisky to be savoured both by long-time single malt fans and new drinkers alike.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Yellow gold, forms a thin line which beads before falling as slow, thin legs.
Nose: Light and fruity, California raisins, sultanas, green apple, caramel and cinnamon.
Palate: Creamy mouthfeel. Dried fruits, a little candied orange peel, vanilla and dark chocolate Florentines.
Finish: Oaky vanilla, baking spice and a touch of peppery warmth.
Summary: Part of the Glen Moray Classic range, all of which (with the exception of the peated cask version) are characterised by being essentially the same mix of 4, 6 & 9 year old bourbon cask matured whiskies which are then finished in different cask types. This sherry cask offering spends 12 months in Oloroso casks before bottling, the result is light but still evident. It’s not in the sherry bomb category, but there is more than enough of that nutty, dried fruity Oloroso character to keep the palate happy.
Glen Moray is one of those whiskies which possibly suffers from its ubiquitous presence at the bargain end of supermarket shelves, but it really shouldn’t be underestimated. As with the standard Elgin Classic this is a very decent, easy sipper of a whisky at a price below £30. Yes, it’s only 40% abv but sometimes that’s enough for a relaxing dram in the evening. Great value and well worth having a look at.
