Glen Moray Elgin Classic - 40%

Distillery notes

Light, smooth and fruity, our Classic is the perfect introduction to the world of single malt Scotch whisky. Encapsulating the flavours for which Glen Moray and indeed Speyside itself is loved for around the world.

Approachable and easy drinking, matured entirely in American oak casks, our Classic opens the door to discovering the rest of Glen Moray's whiskies.

Colour: Light Gold.

Nose: Citrus fruits, butterscotch and warm freshly baked shortbread.

Taste: Malty toffee sweetness with blackcurrant and a fragrant lemongrass citrus edge.

Finish: Comforting and warm. Caramelised citrus fruits drift away to expose subtle spice.

Tasting notes:

Appearance: Pale gold, forms a thin line which beads before falling as slow, oily legs.

Nose: Citrusy and floral, grass cuttings, malty cereal.

Palate: Oily mouthfeel, honeycomb toffee, green orchard fruit, dark berried fruit, lemon posset with lemon shortbread, and a touch of Horlicks Malted Milk.

Finish: Caramel toffee gives way to a mild hint of tobacco leaf and gentle warming spice.

Summary: Glen Moray is one of those distilleries that tends to get overlooked for no good reason as they produce some excellent malts. Whether it’s down to the presentation or a lack of brand awareness is hard to say, but it does mean you can get hold of some great whiskies for a decent price. I picked up this entry level bottling on offer for the grand price of £18 so it would be safe to say my expectations weren’t too high.

What I found was a decent quality, highly approachable, inexpensive malt with enough character to keep the palate entertained and nothing to upset it. It’s never going to rip up trees and you’re not going to spend hours investigating all the little nuances, but that’s not it’s purpose. It’s light, with enough freshness to make it an ideal summertime whisky. For the price this could quite easily sit in my cabinet as budget friendly everyday drinker, and it probably will.
