Penderyn Sherrywood - 46%
From the Distillery website
The Penderyn Sherrywood in this bottle has been aged in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Oloroso sherry casks to bring out its rich fruity flavour.
Nose: Aromas of dark fruit and rich toffee mingle with green apples and hazelnuts to create a deeper mystery
Palate: Rich sweetness gives way to refreshing dryness.
Finish: Sweet notes of toffee and sultana persist in the long finish.
Balance: Sherry and oak/winter spices.
Appearance: Old gold, beads form quickly before falling as slow thick legs.
Nose: Sweet toffee apple coating, orchard fruit, dark fruit, vanilla pod and a grassy, slightly herbal note.
Palate: Demerara sugar, cinnamon apple strudel with vanilla custard, malt, caramel sauce and black liquorice.
Finish: The brown sugar sweetness lingers, together with malt, cinnamon, tobacco leaf and slightly drying oak.
Summary: By no means a sherry bomb, but offers a little more complexity and less sweetness than the Madeira finish. Whilst the Oloroso cask finish is present, the influence is quite limited and it feels a little thin on the palate. It’s pleasant enough but I was left with the feeling it could be so much more. Priced around the £40 mark so that needs taking into consideration, and at that price point there will be plenty who enjoy it.
