Penderyn Madeira Finish - 46%

From the Distillery website

This whisky is the original Penderyn ‘house style’, aged in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in ex-Madeira wine casks to bring out its full gold character. It is bottled at 46% abv.

Nose: A classic freshness with aromas of cream toffee, rich fruit and raisins.

Palate: Crisp and finely rounded, with the sweetness to balance an appetising dryness.

Finish: Notes of tropical fruit, raisins and vanilla persist.

Balance: Oaky vanilla tones/dry sweetness.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Pale gold, beads quickly before falling as medium/slow thick legs.

Nose: Buttery toffee, candied peel, slightly herbal.

Palate: Sweet, vanilla custard, Nice biscuits, baking spices, a slightly bitter herbal note appears late.

Finish: Medium long, sweet vanilla, ginger spice and hints of drying, bitter oak which gradually builds.

Summary: It’s a decent enough whisky, slightly too sweet for my palate with a mildly unpleasant bitterness which builds as the finish progresses and doesn’t help the overall experience. That said, I’ve no doubt there will be plenty of people out there who love it. Currently priced under £40 which feels about right, but for me there are better options out there in the same price range.
