Ben Nevis 10 year old PX Sherry Finish - 56.8%

From the bottler

The Whisky Cellar is an Edinburgh-based independent Scotch Whisky bottler, selecting casks from its private stock at the peak of their character.

Bottled a parcel of several single casks at a time, each individual series under our ‘Private Cellars Selection’ label is studiously chosen to deliver a wide spectrum of natural colour, aroma and flavour.

“Unconstrained by age or statement of vintage, regionality or cask type… if our tasting panel love the whisky enough, we will bottle it.” – Keith Bonnington, Founder.

Ben Nevis is a bold and assertive spirit and this one, re-racked into a rich PX sherry cask on 27th November 2020 and bottled some 15 months later, is sure to delight fans of the distillery and of sherry matured drams.

Tasting notes

Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thin line, slowly developing into small beads before gradually falling as slow, medium legs.

Nose: Quite closed at first, salted caramel toffee, dried orange peel, dried fruit, stewed plums and a little nutty oak follow.

Palate: Big, robust oily arrival. Dark chocolate enrobed orange peel, nuts and ginger, together with dark fruits, stewed apples with cinnamon, sultanas and raisins.

Finish: Rich mocha, heavy on the chocolate, caramelised sugar, ginger and cinnamon provide warmth.

Summary: Big, bold and beautifully balanced, this is a great example of how good Ben Nevis whisky can be. Rich and complex with just enough sweetness and heat to keep you completely entertained. If it hadn’t been for the sublime Bruichladdich Jurançon Doux this would easily have been my star of the show.

Part of Series 4 from the Private Cellars Selection and, in my opinion, very reasonably priced at £70. Cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered and only 313 bottles produced, I’ll definitely be looking to get at least one of them.

I always recommend reading more than one review of any whisky you’re looking to purchase, and in this case we were joined on the tasting session by a couple of the best reviewers I know. So don’t just take my word for it, check out Brian’s Malt Musings and Coldorak’s More Drams Less Drama for their thoughts.

Transparency: this sample pack was received free of charge for independent review. The author has no affiliation with the bottler, all opinions are my own and remain completely impartial.
