Bruichladdich 10 year old Jurançon Vin Doux Naturel Cask - 58.9%

From the bottler

The Whisky Cellar is an Edinburgh-based independent Scotch Whisky bottler, selecting casks from its private stock at the peak of their character.

Bottled a parcel of several single casks at a time, each individual series under our ‘Private Cellars Selection’ label is studiously chosen to deliver a wide spectrum of natural colour, aroma and flavour.

“Unconstrained by age or statement of vintage, regionality or cask type… if our tasting panel love the whisky enough, we will bottle it.” – Keith Bonnington, Founder

A rare Bruichladdich, produced in their ‘Rhinns’ style at 30ppm (phenol) and filled into a Jurançon Doux sweet wine cask for its full maturation.

Only 295 bottles, natural colour and non-chill filtered.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thin line, slowly beads before gradually falling as slow, medium legs.

Nose: Sweet, slightly medicinal peat smoke, turning with a little more time to give a farmyard sweet sileage note. Caramel, pineapple and berried fruit.

Palate: Fruits of the forest preserve, hot cross buns, baked Bramley apple with raisins and sultanas, maple syrup, all held together by soft, sweet smoke.

Finish: Smoky, maple syrup glazed meats on the barbecue.

Summary: I feel I could easily run out of superlatives for this whisky, surprising as I initially had my doubts with that farmyard note on the nose. The palate really does have it all for me, jammy fruit, luscious notes of baked apples with sultanas, a slightly savoury maple syrup note, all held together with a comforting blanket of beautiful sweet smoke. I’ve been fortunate to try some great Bruichladdich whiskies over the years, this one is right up there with them.

It’s rich, elegant and belies it’s relative youth. A few drops of water enhance the smoked meat notes and add a little more orchard fruit to the mix, but for me this is one to drink neat. Absolutely superb!

Part of Series 4 from the Private Cellars Selection and priced at £120, it’s a cask strength limited edition so reasonably priced even for a whisky of this age and you do get an awful lot for your money. Only 295 produced and I’ll be amazed if they don’t all get snapped up very quickly.

I always recommend reading more than one review of any whisky you’re looking to purchase, and in this case we were joined on the tasting session by a couple of the best reviewers I know. So don’t just take my word for it, check out Brian’s Malt Musings and Coldorak’s More Drams Less Drama for their thoughts.
