Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish (Pre-release sample) - 50.1%

Distillery notes

Peated spirit originally filled into virgin oak in early 2018, followed by transfer to a first fill cognac cask at the end of 2020. Due for release later in 2022.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thin line which beads and falls as slow, thick legs.

Nose: Gentle peat smoke, hints of barbecued meat, stewed apples and caramel sauce, a hint of menthol and eucalyptus lozenges in the background.

Palate: Sweet, poached orchard fruit followed by refined peat smoke. Honey, caramel and a little citrus follow.

Finish: Sweet, soft peat lingers on the palate.

Summary: Although peated, this is a very different whisky to the Sauternes Cask Limited Edition. The smoke is there, but it feels lighter, more refined and that industrial oiliness isn't present.  Instead, the lovely notes of poached apples and pears are allowed to shine, along with that sweetness from the honey and caramel. It's only towards the finish that the smoke really comes to the fore.

This is another quality whisky although the more robust, powerful peat smoke of the Sauternes finish just wins it for me…but it's a fine margin. Due for release later this year and definitely one worth looking out for.
