Glasgow 1770 Limited Edition Sauternes Cask Finish - 53.7%
From the distillery website
Cask No. 18/994 - Sauternes Cask Finish - Peated Single Malt.
Only 486 individually numbered bottles, presented in a luxury display carton which is also individually numbered.
Double pot distilled using Concerto barley that has been peated to 50PPM, this whisky was distilled on the 8th of May 2018 and initially filled into a fresh virgin oak (heavy char) cask. On the 14th of January 2021, the spirit was filled into a French Sauternes Barrique, before being bottled at 53.7% ABV on the 29th of October 2021.
A perfectly rounded smoky single malt with notes of sweet and smoky BBQ sauce, rich toffee and salted caramel with a very long and deeply earthy finish.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a broad, oily line which slowly falls as thick legs.
Nose: Barbecue sauce with a generous helping of smoke, caramel toffee, salt, a little dunnage in the background
Palate: Dry, oily smoke, caramel sweetness, smoked haddock and a little brine. Water brings out oaky astringency and a hint of black liquorice.
Finish: Long, it just keeps on going. Sweet, oily smoke, dunnage and a touch of chilli spice.
Summary: This is a whisky for peat lovers. Rich, powerful smoke, sweet caramel and a little industrial oiliness balanced beautifully. The sweet and smoke combination immediately brings to mind Octomore BBQ sauce from the Artisan Restaurant in Wishaw, which I also highly recommend.
Very impressive for such a young whisky, it’s just a shame this is a limited edition as it deserves a wide audience. One thing to note though, as with all the Glasgow 1770 expressions this is a 50cl bottle and at £59 that does make it quite pricey when also taking the age into consideration. That said, it’s a limited edition and bottled at a very respectable 53.7% so it’s not exorbitant, especially in the current market.
