Benromach 21 - 43%
From the distillery
Benromach 21 Year Old is matured in the finest first-fill Sherry and bourbon casks for over two decades.
Tasting notes
Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thin line which falls as slow, thin legs
Nose: Orange peel, toasted almonds, stewed plums black liquorice and bonfire embers
Palate: Rich, full bodied and slightly astringent. Seville orange marmalade, raspberry cordial, dried fruit, baking spices and a prickle of black pepper
Finish: Rich fruit, citrus, black liquorice, oak char, cracked black pepper and mild oaky astringency
Summary: I first tried this a few years ago and my feelings about it haven’t changed a great deal since then. It’s a lovely, refined malt, with the longer maturation bringing additional richness and complexity. Although peated it only adds a very subtle smokiness, everything here is beautifully balanced.
A very impressive whisky, at a price of £150 on the Benromach it’s certainly expensive but, in a time of exhorbitant pricing, it’s around the going rate for a 21 year old whisky. It’s definitely worth noting it can be found at a cheaper price by shopping around.
