Glen Moray 2014 Warehouse 1 Tequila Cask Finish - 55.2%
Part of Glen Moray’s experimental Warehouse 1 collection, this whisky was aged for eight years in Bourbon casks before finishing in Mexican Tequila casks and bottled at 55.2%
Tasting notes:
Appearance: Old gold in colour, forms a thin line which beads before gradually falling as thick, oily legs
Nose: Green apples, vanilla cream, unripe Conference pears, dried fruit, cinnamon, almond skin and a soft herbal note. After a while milk chocolate appears
Palate: Mouthcoating and a little prickly at first. Nutty oak, stewed apples, soft brown sugar, hard herbs particularly lemon thyme, and a touch vegetal. With water, the apple and vegetal notes become more prominent
Finish: Long and lingering with a tannic astringency which builds. Old leather, gentle agave, toasted oak and baking spice
Overall: I must admit I enjoy a good Añejo tequila, but I find tequila cask finishes can be really hit and miss, and more often a miss than a hit. However, the balance between cask and spirit on this one is really well done, with the tequila just adding a little more complexity rather than overpowering with agave.
It’s a very decent dram, slightly pricey at its usual price of around £86 but it can currently be found cheaper at Master of Malt and if you’re looking for something different it’s worth a look.
