The Glenlivet 14 - 40%

 From the distillery website

The Glenlivet 14 Year Old scotch whisky is matured in bourbon and sherry casks before being finished in the highest quality ex-cognac casks for at least six months.

Featuring raisin-rich cognac and signature citrus notes married with creamy smoothness, the luscious liquid has traveled from bourbon and sherry casks to a selective finish in cognac casks. Bursting with sweet and fruity aromas and inspired by Captain Bill Smith Grant, great-grandson of our Founder George Smith, The Glenlivet 14 Year Old shines as a proud celebration of our Speyside craft. Wander from the misty glens of Scottish Speyside to the rolling vineyards of France’s Cognac region at every sip.

Tasting notes:

Appearance: The colour of burnished gold, forms a thin line which beads before falling slowly as thick, oily legs

Nose: Apricot jam, California raisins, heather honey, cinnamon, anise and earthy herbs

Palate: Dried fruit, poached orchard fruit, soft brown sugar, nutty oak, cinnamon, satsumas and a hint of coffee

Finish: Mildly astringent oak, cinnamon, milky coffee with brown sugar and a touch of black pepper

Overall: As with so much of the Glenlivet core range, it’s a decent enough whisky but suffers from the 40% abv. There are some really pleasant notes in there, but everything from the thin mouthfeel to the finish feels like there could be so much more. An approachable whisky, drinkable but somewhat lacking.

Current prices vary widely but the average seems to be around £60, which feels a little high when there are better, and cheaper, offerings available.
