Borders Distillery - Right As Rain - 40%

From the distillery website

Our distillery opened in March 2018 – the first Scotch Whisky distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837. We’re dedicated to capturing the true spirit of the Borders, and bringing whisky-making back to the region.

Right As Rain is the third in our series of experimental blended Scotch whiskies, made entirely by us in the Scottish Borders.

Right As Rain brings together single grain rye whisky matured in Cognac casks with single malts aged in red wine and first-fill bourbon. Bottled without filtration. 75% single malt. 25% single grain.

Tasting notes:

Appearance: Burnished gold in colour, forms a thin line which beads before eventually falling as thick, oily legs

Nose: Orchard fruit, gooseberries, nectarine skin, vanilla and Geranium leaves

Palate: Soft, creamy mouthfeel with a prickle of spice. Vanilla ice cream, peach & strawberry pie filling, Mr Kiplings Cherry Bakewell tarts, lemon cream biscuits, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper

Finish:  Long and lingering, with toasted almonds, peaches, strawberry laces, cooling mint, cinnamon and a prickle of black pepper. With time, tobacco leaf appears

Overall: A whisky which, for me anyway, really comes into its own at the finish. Full of fruit, but not overly sweet, and seems to change markedly with time in the glass. It’s a really interesting, blend, not just of spirit but also cask influences. Cleverly conceived and very well put together. It’s not a profile I would normally seek out but I enjoyed it and I’m very glad I got the opportunity to try it. Firmly in the category of one of those whiskies I definitely wouldn’t turn down a dram if offered.

Price is £35, so if you’re looking for something a little different without breaking the bank, then this might be one for you.
