Laphroaig 10 Sherry Oak Finish - 48%
From the Distillery website
This unique expression from Laphroaig combines the unforgettable flavour of our 10-year-old whisky with the sweet, aromatic flavours from the Oloroso sherry casks.
The European oak sherry casks are carefully selected to complement the unique and much-loved taste of Laphroaig. The additional sweetness and character of the Oloroso casks add complexity and balance to create a unique and exciting expression, but one that stays true to the character of Laphroaig.
Tasting notes:
Appearance: Rich chestnut colour, forms a thin line which beads before falling as slow, thin legs
Nose: Subtle phenolic peat smoke, dried fruit, smoked meats and worn leather
Palate: Medicinal peat, dark chocolate enrobed raisins, smoked ham with a honey and maple syrup glaze, Medjool dates and subtle baking spices.
Finish: Long, lingering smoke, nutty oak, pine needle tea, coastal brine, a touch of clove oil, and cinnamon warmth.
Summary: A really enjoyable expression from Laphroaig. Some Oloroso finishes can be a little overpowering, but this is well balanced and marries well with the typical medicinal character to be found in the standard 10 year old bottling.
The very healthy abv of 48% is a big plus, adding body and greater intensity of flavour. Whilst it also opens up the opportunity to play around with dilution, this is one I prefer neat as water tended to bring out more of the oak tannin astringency.
A solid addition to the Laphroaig stable, and at a reasonable price in the current market.
