Caisteal Chamuis 15 - 50%
From the bottlers
A bold and smoky whisky of fine single malts distilled on the islands of Scotland, re-barrelled and further aged in a single Oloroso sherry butt for a rich, smooth and lingering finish. Limited to 700 bottles.
Tasting notes
Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thin line which beads before slowly falling as thick, oily legs.
Nose: Sweet, phenolic peat smoke, California raisins and juicy sultanas, salty sea breeze and a mild, old library book mustiness.
Palate: Lovely oily mouthfeel. This initially feels muted, soft notes of dried fruits, a touch of hazelnut purée, vanilla, salted caramel and an unexpectedly gentle blanket of dry, ashy smoke.
Finish: Ashy, bonfire smoke, struck match, astringent nutty oak, maritime saltiness and sweet dried fruit linger on the palate.
Overall: Remarkably similar to the 12 year old bottling, starts off with a really enjoyable nose, initially disappointing on the palate before redeeming itself at the close. It’s a good, very drinkable blend but it just feels like there is something missing to give that initial impact on the palate.
