Cù Bòcan Creation #6 - 46%
From the distillery
Creation #6 can be described in two words: RUM + RAISIN. Our sixth Creation marries Pedro Ximénez casks and Jamaican rum casks with our smoky spirit resulting in flavours of toasted Jamaica ginger cake, Bonfire Toffee, spiced plum jam, Amaretto cherries and Daim bar.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Bright gold in colour, forms a thin line which beads before falling as slow, thin legs.
Nose: Rich, complex and interesting. Hints of dunnage warehouse floors intermingled with McVities Jamaican Ginger cake, succulent dried fruits, dark fruit jam and a mild smoky backdrop.
Palate: Damson jam, black treacle, grilled pineapple, Medjool dates, maple syrup and walnut pancakes, Jamaican Ginger cake, soft cinnamon warmth and gentle smoke.
Finish: Pineapple upside down cake topped with a smoky, and slightly musty, rum and raisin ice cream and a drizzle of maple syrup.
Summary: The Creation series from Cù Bòcan whisky always seems to deliver, even when the cask combinations stray from the beaten path. On the face of it, marrying peated spirit from PX and rum casks sounds like a potential recipe for disharmony. However, there is such a lovely balance between the PX, rum and smoke that something very nice indeed has been created. A touch of the Caribbean, together with luscious dark fruits, soft peat and even a hint of dunnage funk make this such an interesting, and enjoyable, dram.
Currently retailing at just over £60, presented at 46% abv and non-chill filtered. It’s clever, it’s unusual and it works. If you’re looking for something a little different and relatively inexpensive then there are far worse choices out there than this.
