Glen Moray Warehouse 1 2015 Rioja Cask Matured - 58.8%
From the distillery
This deep and fruity single malt is a uniquely full-bodied take on Glen Moray's Speyside style. Wholly aged in Rioja red wine casks from Spain, the whisky layers notes of cherries and plums with hints of leather and oak, for a dram as rich as it is rare.
Tasting notes
Appearance: Burnished gold, clings to the glass before falling as thick, oily legs.
Nose: Fruit very much to the fore, with ripe cherries, red berries, cider apples and stone fruit in abundance.
Palate: More savoury than expected from the nose, with tobacco leaf and old worn leather making an appearance, together with black cherries, red apples and a sharp prickle of ginger. With water, more of that fruitiness comes through in addition to toning down the heat to a spicy warmth.
Finish: Red berries, red apple skins, vintage leather jackets, together with nutty oak, ginger heat and a mild tannic astringency.
Summary: It would be fair to say this is a whisky where the full maturation in Rioja casks really makes its presence felt. A very impressive, fruity dram, enhanced even further with a little water.
