Cragganmore 12 2019 Special Release - 58.4%

The Diageo Special Release series occasionally throws up some unexpected offerings, and the release of a smoky Cragganmore is certainly one to raise a few eyebrows. Matured in refill American Oak casks, this is said to be the first-ever release of a smoky whisky from this distillery.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Very pale Pinot Grigio wine colour, forms a thin line which beads before gradually falling as thick, oily legs

Nose: Honey, soft bonfire smoke, zesty lemon, vanilla, orchard fruit, red apple skin and vanilla.

Palate: Full, creamy mouthfeel. Honey and vanilla at first, followed by soft ashy smoke, stone fruit, milk chocolate enrobed orange peel, oak spices and peppery warmth.

Finish: Long, lingering honeyed malt, stone fruit and mild oak spice warmth, gradually evolves into soft, barbecue meaty smoke with a prickle of pepper.

Summary: I've had a soft spot for Cragganmore for a very long time, the core range 12 year old bottling is one of those I will often suggest to those who are new to whisky and want to try something approachable but interesting.

A beautifully balanced whisky with a rich, indulgent mouthfeel. The soft smoke adds yet another layer of complexity, which is further enhanced by the bottling at cask strength. First-ever smoky expression from Cragganmore, but based on this offering I genuinely hope not the last.

As far as price goes, then it's no secret that I, like many others, have a problem with the recent pricing policies at Diageo and at around £90 this is a little on the expensive side. However, it's a special release and the curiosity factor alone for a smoky Cragganmore makes that price a little easier to swallow.
