Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition - 43%
From the Diageo website
An annual release of some of our finest single malt scotch whiskies.
Each showcases a regional style of malt whisky-making, using skills and knowledge honed over many years. The result is a range of sublime, deeply flavoured single malt whiskies which possess a richness, depth, complexity and nuance of flavour not found in the regular release. Aged in oak cask wood selected to complement the individual distillery’s character.
2006 Dalwhinnie double-matured in ex-bodega Oloroso cask wood for a rich sweetness and spicy complexity to enhance the heathery, honeyed aromas and tastes of the regular release.
Appearance: Bright, new gold, forms a thick line which falls as slow, thick legs.
Nose: Sweet, with pineapple, orange, honey, golden raisins, sultanas and almond flakes.
Palate: Soft creamy mouthfeel, dried fruit, vanilla cream, stoned fruit, heather honey, almonds and dried banana. A few drops of water bring a mild note of Assam tea.
Finish: A sweet finish, becoming more spicy with nutmeg, white pepper and drying, nutty oak.
Summary: A very genuine, easy drinker of a whisky. There is a sweetness and nuttiness not seen in the standard release which take the enjoyment up a notch. Whilst not particularly complex, there is plenty of flavour in there to compliment a delightfully fragrant nose.
Priced around the £70, which feels a tad on the expensive side but not atypical of Diageo prices these days. Personally, I wouldn’t buy one at that price but I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up at it if bought as a gift.
