Springbank 18 2022 Edition - 46%

From the distillery

Our 18 year old is full of authority and is a classic, full-bodied dram. With a delicious nose, this whisky will tempt you in and hold your attention as you uncover its unique palate and finish. 65% Bourbon, 35% Sherry.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Amber gold, forms a thin line which beads before slowly falling as thin, oily legs.

Nose: Honeycomb, flaked almonds, pear drops, dried fruit, pineapple cubes and a little musty dunnage.

Palate: Full bodied, with an oiliness that coats the mouth. Caramel, marzipan, dried fruit, honey, vanilla, light ashy smoke and coastal salt. A few drops of water brings more caramel and creaminess to the mouthfeel.

Finish: Nutty oak and dried fruit with a little tannic astringency.

Summary: Another very solid release from Springbank, well balanced with enough sherry cask influence to add complexity and depth. That typical Campbeltown character of slight dunnage mustiness and sea salt is there, but quite subtle in this case.

Extremely drinkable, although the short finish lets it down a little. Only 46% but the addition of a few drops of water adds more caramel sweetness and extends the finish nicely. As with all recent Springbank releases, the major issue is getting hold of a bottle without the need to pay well over the odds on the secondary market.
