The Big Smoke Heavily Peated - 50% abv
From the Spirits Embassy website
The Big Smoke, as the name suggests, is a happy melange of Scotland's smokiest distilleries. True connoisseurs will be able to savour and appreciate the distinct features and smokiness of each spirit.
Notes of burnt oak, sweet fruit and balanced to perfection with a good heap of smoke; transports you to a sandy beach on Islay, bonfire in front of you and the salty air gusting aromas of sweet smoke. A true masterpiece befitting one of the world’s most sought after islands.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale gold, forms a thin line which beads before slowly falling as thick, oily legs.
Nose: Beach barbecues, sweet glazed smoked meats, zesty citrus, orchard fruits, vanilla, and salty sea breeze.
Palate: Soft, almost buttery mouthfeel. Maritime saltiness and dry ashy smoke meet, followed by roasted pineapple and soft, stewed orchard fruit, vanilla, coconut cream and caramel. A touch of ginger and black pepper provide a mild, spicy prickle.
Finish: Long and lingering with notes of undissolved brown sugar from the bottom of a creamy coffee cup, vanilla, cinnamon and ginger spice, all enveloped in a soft, peaty glow.
Summary: Given the popularity of Islay whiskies it’s unsurprising that there are plenty of well-priced, peated blends out there, although quality varies greatly. This Big Smoke is certainly one of the more enjoyable ones, with a mouthfeel and complexity due in no small part to the generous abv. Plenty of sweet, ashy peat, fruit and coastal salinity would lead me to think Caol Ila plays a central role. At a current price of around £42, good value for money.
