Glasgow 1770 Tokaji Cask Finish - 58.1%

A limited edition release of only 210 bottles. Initially matured in first-fill Bourbon barrels, before finishing in Hungarian Tokaji wine hogsheads and bottled at 58.1% abv.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Old gold, forms a thin line which beads before falling as slow, thin legs.

Nose: Red apples, caramel sauce, lemon and lime zest, damp forest floors and furniture polish.

Palate: A sharp burst of young spirit followed by baked apples with honey and sultanas covered in caramel sauce, vanilla, lemon citrus, milk chocolate enrobed crystallised ginger, damp wood and a touch of tannic oak. The addition of water tames the spirit and brings out Heinz tinned sponge pudding and custard.

Finish: Citrus and caramel with a funky, damp earth note.

Summary: I was fortunate to get the chance to try last year’s triple distilled Limited Edition Tokaji Cask bottling, a truly impressive whisky for one so young. This bottling is a very different animal, with a feel more in keeping with the youthfulness of the spirit. At 58.1% it’s a touch too spirit forward for me but responds well to a few drops of water, bringing out more vanilla and that lovely sponge pudding note. The damp earth note was unexpected but welcome nonetheless, adding another dimension to the dram.

Recently released at a price of £59, in keeping with the rest of the range this is now in a 70cl format rather than the previous 50cl. This is a small batch release of only 210 bottles, so will almost certainly sell out quickly.
