Macduff 10 Year Old - Brave New Spirits ‘The Thane of Fife’ - 56.2%
Fresh from the successful release of their Voodoo range comes the Cask Noir Editions series from Brave New Spirits. As the name suggests, the range takes inspiration from classic movies and novels from a bygone era, whilst giving a nod to the distillery itself.
The Cask Noir Editions series will be comprised predominantly of single cask bottlings, mainly single malts with the occasional single grain. All presented at cask strength, with no added colour and no chill-filtration.
‘The Thane of Fife’ is an 10 year old Macduff from a first-fill Pedro Ximenez Sherry hogshead and bottled at a healthy 56.2% abv.
The name is a reference to Lord Macduff in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, who held the title Thane of Fife.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Burnished gold with a faint pinkish hue, forms a thin line which beads before falling as thin, oily legs.
Nose: Mince pies meet sticky toffee pudding meets chocolate sponge and custard.
Palate: Thick, oily mouthfeel. Dried fruits, candied orange peel, coffee beans, toasted almonds, a touch of dunnage and just a hint of struck match.
Finish: Hazelnuts, dark roast coffee, dunnage, a touch of struck match and a little cinnamon warmth.
Overall: This is one of those whiskies you could nose for hours, there really is so much to enjoy here. Deep, rich, well balanced and far more complex than you would expect from a ten-year-old whisky.
If you’re looking for a whisky with all the flavours of Christmas, but not too ‘clean’, this could be a perfect choice. A very impressive whisky, and one I’ll be looking out for when the range is launched in the very near future.
