Glasgow 1770 The Original - 46%
Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky, The Original, is the whisky that started it all. Our inaugural expression, The Original is a fresh and fruity single malt that combines the finest concerto malted barley with the purest Scottish water from Loch Katrine.
A minimum of 72 hours of fermentation combined with an extremely slow distillation results in a fruity and delectably sweet new make spirit which is then matured in first fill ex-bourbon casks before a finishing period in virgin American oak barrels.
Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural in colour, The Original is a true representation of the whisky we produce at The Glasgow Distillery and showcases our production philosophy and dedication to quality.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Deep gold, forms a thin line which beads before quickly falling as thin legs.
Nose: Slightly overripe pineapple, raisins, dates, Tunnocks Caramel biscuits, freshly cut grass straight out of the mower bin.
Palate: Soft, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Crema Catalana with plenty of caramelised sugar topping, orange peel, flaked almonds, sticky dates, raisins, hints of biscuit and oak with white pepper bringing warmth.
With a few drops of water, Seville orange marmalade and a hint of tobacco leaf appear.
Finish: More of the Seville orange marmalade, caramel biscuits and wood spice.
Overall: Pleasant and slightly spicy, with an enjoyable mouthfeel and enough fruit notes without becoming overly sweet. The addition of a few drops of water really takes it up a notch, bringing out the rich marmalade note which adds an air of complexity.
Current price is £49 for a 70cl bottle, in keeping with the rest of the core range and much better value than the old 50cl editions. Worth a try if you want to get an idea what this distillery is all about.
