English Whisky Co. Chapter 14 - 46%
Based in Norfolk, St George’s Distillery are England's oldest whisky distillery and an independent family owned business. Originally conceived by father and son partnership James and Andrew Nelstrop as a micro-distillery, plans quickly changed due to HMRC requiring a still size of no less than 1800 litres.
With the help of then retired ex-Laphroaig Master Distiller Iain Henderson, production started and the first 29 casks laid down in December 2006.
St. George’s use locally sourced barley and fresh water from the Brecklands aquifer which runs beneath the distillery.
About the whisky
A five year old bottling from the St Georges Distillery, matured in American bourbon casks and bottled in July 2013.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Pale white wine in colour, forms a thin line which beads before quickly falling as thick legs.
Nose: Light, fruity and floral. Poached orchard fruits, light vanilla, a hint of icing sugar and filo pastry.
Palate: Puff pastry apple turnovers with a touch of cinnamon, lemon citrus, crème brûlée, poached pears and rum soaked raisins.
Finish: Rum and raisin ice cream, a touch of cinnamon warmth and drying oak.
Summary: Light and elegant with a very enjoyable finish. Although young, the alcohol is well integrated and could easily be mistaken for a bottle with a few more years in the cask. Another solid choice from a distillery which continues to impress.
