Tasting Notes:
Appearance: New gold, forms a thin line which beads before falls as slow, thick legs.
Nose: Sweet, fruity and slightly phenolic smoke. Barbecued pineapple and honey glazed meats, lemon barley water, stewed apple and a touch of salty sea air.
Palate: Sweet and slightly citrus with a burst of pepper, soft smoke comes through gradually and subtly builds together with maritime saltiness.
Finish: Sweetness lingers on the palate as the gentle smoke slowly dissipates.
Summary: This is a lovely dram with most, if not all, of the elements you want from a Bunnahabhain. The smoke is soft and subtle but unmistakeable, adding to that typical coastal brine and beautifully balanced by a gentle honeyed sweetness and a touch of spice.
With water, more of that sweetness appears and the finish is a little longer, however it is at the expense of much of the smoke and my own preference would be to drink this neat.
Priced at £60, excellent value for a whisky of this quality. Unusually for me, I bought a bottle within minutes of sampling this on the tasting. With limited bottles available, at that price I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity.
