South Star Islay Series 001 - 48%

From the South Star Spirits website:

South Star Spirits is a whisky bottling company born from 4 whisky enthusiasts who are building a distillery in the heart of one of Scotch Whiskies most cherished regions.

The Dál Riata Distillery will be located in the heart of Campbeltown producing single malt scotch whisky with traditions and styles that are consistent with whiskies distilled and matured on the western seaboard.

We are celebrating this new addition to the magical world of distillation by releasing a small batch range of matured single malt whiskies to let you know we’re here...hello!

Eight-year-old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
10 x Hogsheads vatted
Only 2200 bottles available.
Nose: Rich & intense smoke, some gentleness to it
Palate: Distinct peat, vanilla & salt
Finish: Lingering ashy notes with just enough oak

Tasting notes:

Appearance: Forms a thick line which falls as slow, thick legs.

Nose: Sweet honey, vanilla, a light oaky nuttiness and a hint of dry, gentle smoke.

Palate: Mouthcoatingly buttery. Heather honey, vanilla custard, marshmallows, gentle bonfire smoke and a hint of coastal salt.

Finish: A continuation from the palate, sweet honey and vanilla, maritime brine and gentle ashy smoke.

Summary: A gentle, sweet introduction to Islay peated whisky. Although an unnamed distillery there’s plenty to suggest this is from Caol Ila.  Easy drinking and decent value for money at around £50 even though still relatively young at 8 years old. Limited edition so availability may be an issue, but if you want something at the more subtle end of the peated Islay whisky scale this may be worth seeking out.
