Nevis Dew 12 Deluxe Blend - 40%
Founded by ‘Long John’ MacDonald in 1825, Ben Nevis Distillery is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. Situated at the foot of Britain's highest mountain, the distillery draws its water from the highest water source in Scotland, the Allt a’Mhuilinn which originates from two pools on Ben Nevis, namely Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste.
Whilst the distillery produces single malt under the Ben Nevis brand, the whisky is more commonly seen as independent bottlings. The whisky is also a key feature of the Nevis Dew blends.
The distillery has been owned by the Japanese company Nikki Whisky Distilling Co., a subsidiary of Asahi Group Holdings since 1989. A significant amount of the spirit is exported to Japan each year to be used for blending.
Tasting notes:
Appearance: Pale gold, forms a thick line which falls in medium slow thick legs.
Nose: Sweet caramel toffee, sultanas, barley sugar sweets and just a gentle whiff of smoke.
Palate: Creamy mouthfeel, vanilla, caramel toffee sauce, malted milk biscuits, mild orange peel and light smoke.
Finish: Sweet and slightly drying oakiness.
Summary: An easy drinking blend with a very pleasant creaminess to the mouthfeel. A touch more complex and balanced compared to the Blue Label, with the smokiness a little more evident. Priced at around £25 so expectations shouldn’t be too high and it has to be said it lacks character, but at this price point it’s a decent enough option.
