Tomintoul 10 - 40%

Distillery notes:

Tomintoul Aged 10 Years has been lovingly crafted from a selection of the finest bourbon casks, each aged for at least ten years.

Colour: Gold

Nose: Delicate and floral with hints of acacia honey, vanilla, wholemeal toast and mellow wood spices.

Palate: Sweet and honeyed with layers of creme caramel and toasted almond with highlights of lemon zest and grassy freshness.

Finish: Notes of buttery oak, citrus peels fading into a mellow cake spice linger.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Old gold, forms a thin line which beads before falling as slow, thick legs.

Nose: Toasted cereal with honey, vanilla fudge and a little oak woodiness.

Palate: Quite thin entrance becoming creamier with time, notes of creamy caramel toffee, heather honey, barley sugar, lemon zest, cut grass and nutty oak.

Finish: Lemon citrus, buttered toast and honey, baking spices and a gentle hint of tobacco leaf.

Summary: Tomintoul describes itself as 'the gentle spirit' and it's easy to understand why. It's light and delicate enough to fit nicely into the easily accessible category. One of those whiskies you reach for when you just want a simple, uncomplicated dram, although for me it's a little too simple. At a price of around £30, decent value but just lacking that little extra to make it stand out from the crowd.
