Nc’Nean Organic Single Malt - 46%

Located on the Drimnin Estate on the Morvern Peninsula looking across to Mull, Nc’Nean is an independent, organic distillery with a mission of pioneering sustainable production processes. Nc’nean is one of the new generation of Scottish distilleries, with the inaugural whisky being launched in 2020.

Distillery notes:

Smooth and elegant, our whisky is easy-going and delicious however you drink it, with flavours of citrus, peach, apricot and spice.

Our whisky is made from organic Scottish barley whose natural yields and rich soils contribute depth of flavour. Our gentle fermentation and distillation accentuate the delicate, fruity flavours in the spirit. Matured in specially treated red wine and American whiskey barrels to develop our spirit’s signature body and sweetness.

Our whisky makes a big impression with the smallest footprint. Every bottle is certified organic, made in our verified carbon neutral distillery and bottled in a 100% recycled glass bottle.

Taste: Lemon Posset, Peach & Apricot, Spiced Rye Bread.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Old gold, forms a thin line which beads before slowly falling as thick, oily legs.

Nose: Light and refreshing, zesty lemon,  cut grass, light caramel, pineapple juice, a hint of vanilla.

Palate: Thin at first, turning creamier with time in the mouth. Malted milk biscuits, stone fruit, lemon curd, ripe banana, a touch of red berries and a little warming cinnamon.

Finish: Creamy vanilla, sweet malt, tannic oak spice and dryness together with a little white pepper heat.

Summary: Light and gentle, this is an easy drinking, fruity malt whisky. Although at five years old it’s a young spirit, it’s well balanced and the alcohol is well integrated rather than being a major part of the character. Although it didn’t blow me away, there are still a lot of good things about this whisky which leave me very interested to see how these spirits will develop with a few more years of maturation.

Priced a little below the £50 mark, decent value for money, beautiful bottle and from a distillery with impeccable environmental credentials. It’s easy to see why these batches tend to sell out very quickly.
