Jura Red Wine Cask Finish - 40%

Distillery notes:

Jura Cask Editions celebrate the connection between the land and spirit. Uniting the distinctive regional flavours of selected red wine cases with our island malt, this unique red wine cask edition continues to explore the world of cask finishes in ever more innovative ways.

This is a richly fruity and full-bodied single malt – a special whisky for special moments to share with your people.

Cask finish: Initially matured in American White Oak ex bourbon barrels, finished in hand-selected European red wine casks to deliver a perfect balance of rich berry flavours.

Colour: Deep mahogany gold.

Nose: Sultanas, creamy caramel, black forest fruits and a hint of heather honey.

Taste: Raspberries, strawberries, creamy vanilla and cinnamon spice.

Tasting notes:

Appearance: Deep honey gold, forms a thick line which breaks and quickly falls as thick legs.

Nose: Caramel sauce, dried fruit, blackberries, red apple and honey.

Palate: Thin at first, becoming a little creamier with time in the mouth. Soft caramel toffee, malted milk, vanilla and red berried fruit. Cinnamon brings gentle warmth.

Finish: Red fruit, malted milk drinks and cinnamon spice persist, along with a little nutty oak spice.

Summary: The initial impression is that the red wine cask influence is fairly limited, with the impact on palate and colour being quite minimal. For me it feels a little ‘thin’ and it would be interesting to see this at a higher abv and without chill filtration. That said, it’s still a very quaffable whisky, and good value for money at £30. As such, it does exactly what it sets out to do.
