Penderyn Portwood - 46%

From the distillery website

This Portwood-finish whisky is a firm favourite among our customers in France and a real attention grabber. It is bottled at 46% abv.

Nose: Aromas of rich dried fruits with dark chocolate and cranberries; a hint of toasty oak mingles with a baked nutty dryness.

Palate: A creamy richness with some honey and spiced notes emerging.

Finish: Smooth with a soft oak and honey sweetness lingering gently on the tongue.

Balance: Rich wood/chocolate & dry fruits.

Tasting notes

Appearance: Burnished gold with a faint pink hue, swirling produces a thin line which forms small beads before falling as slow, thin legs.

Nose: Honey, cranberry sauce, dark chocolate, caramel toffee and nutty oak spice.

Palate: Rich, creamy introduction, sultanas, caramel, red berries, clover honey, cinnamon adds a touch of spicy warmth.

Finish: Dried goji berries, sweet honey, milk chocolate, toasted almond, cinnamon and a lingering of drying oak.

Summary: A very pleasant, easy drinking whisky. Fruity, almost to the point of jamminess without being overly sweet. The dark chocolate and notes from the nutty oak bring a level of depth and combine well with the creamy mouthfeel. It’s well put together, nicely balanced and enjoyable.

For me, it’s one of the better whiskies in the Penderyn core range. I certainly enjoyed it, however I probably wouldn’t buy a bottle as I feel there are better options at its current price point around the £55 mark. That’s just my opinion though, and there will be many who disagree and are more than happy to do so.
