Glencadam 17 Triple Cask Portwood Finish - 46%
Distillery notes:
Glencadam Distillery opened in 1825 and since then little has changed. The entire Glencadam range is bottled at a strength of 46%, is unchillfiltered and natural in colour.
Multi-award winning Glencadam Highland Single Scotch Malt Whisky Aged 17 Years Triple Cask Portwood Finish is a fine example of centuries of craftsmanship and tradition. “The rather exquisite” malt with a beautifully balanced, pure flavour.
Colour: Stunning rosé pink hue.
Nose: Bold and rich with aromas of red fruits, maraschino cherries, marzipan and Christmas spices.
Palate: Layers of dark berry fruit and bramble jam mixed with walnut, coffee grounds, clove spice and subtle hints of cigar smoke.
Finish: Woody and warming with notes of red fruits and chocolate cherry liqueurs leading into cinnamon and nutmeg spice.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Burnished gold with a slight pink hue, forms a thin line which quickly beads followed by a very slow fall of thick, oily legs.
Nose: Musty grape skins at first which settles to reveal red fruit and a little cinnamon warmth.
Palate: Pleasantly mouthcoating texture, an initial burst of red fruit particularly ripe cherries and also a little blackberry, followed by toasted almond and a hint of mocha.
Finish: Quite short, coffee, milk chocolate, fruits of the forest preserve and a little nutty oak, cinnamon and clove spice.
Summary: Really well balanced, the fruit and mocha notes combine well to bring a touch of complexity and subtle elegance. The only downside was the short finish as I was really enjoying it and would have loved this to continue.
Overall this is a malt which I was pleasantly impressed with and would happily drink again if given the opportunity. Not easy to get hold of now, when available the price seems to hover just above the £100 mark, not bad for a 17 year old, limited edition whisky in the current climate.
