Glenallachie 1992 - 43% - Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice
“One of Scotland’s few independently owned and managed distilleries, The Glenallachie is led by industry veteran, Billy Walker, who boasts an astonishing 50-year tenure in whisky. Nestled at the foot of Ben Rinnes, the distillery lies at the heart of the Speyside, with a focus upon quality over quantity”.
An independent bottling of Glenallachie, distilled in 1992 and matured in refill bourbon barrels & sherry hogsheads before bottling in 2009.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Pale straw, forms an inverted crown which falls as slow, thick legs.
Nose: Woody oak, followed by citrus fruit, vanilla, orchard fruit, hints of coconut.
Palate: Creamy mouthfeel, barley sugar, lemon zest, vanilla custard, sultanas, toasted almond and just a hint of cinnamon spice.
Finish: Heather honey, lemon peel, and cinnamon which lingers on the palate. Tannic oak dryness follows.
Summary: An enjoyable, summery whisky. Not hugely complex, but it manages to combine light and creamy with a good amount of citrus notes and spice. I’m not sure it’s a bottle I would buy, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down a glass if offered one.
A big thank you to Mick at The Whiskey Chaps for the opportunity to try this one.
