Filey Bay Flagship - 46%
Distillery notes:
Filey Bay is the first single malt whisky made in, and of, Yorkshire. Why 'of Yorkshire'? Because it's created by us from field to bottle, here on the coast.
All our barley is grown here in Hunmanby, on our family farm, and we get our water from two sources, sunk deep into the chalk. We're in control of every stage of the growing and distilling process, from choosing the variety of barley and how it is grown, right through to bottling ourselves at the distillery.
Light, fruity and creamy, our Flagship single malt is made with 100% homegrown barley and is the culmination of our bourbon matured style following on from our First and Second Releases launched in 2019. It is now beautifully rounded and will be forming the cornerstone of our upcoming core range.
Tasting Notes: Light, creamy and fruity with flavours of citrus, caramel, honey and vanilla.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Pale straw colour, forms a thick line which breaks before quickly falling as thick legs.
Nose: Green apples, unripened pear, lemon zest, vanilla, caramel toffee, icing sugar and a little honey.
Palate: Light initial entrance, turning creamier with time in the mouth. Vanilla takes centre stage, supported by honeycomb toffee, baked apple, soft Comice pears, lemon sherbet and a touch of peppery spice.
Finish: Malted milk biscuits and almond nuttiness which fade to allow a grassy, almost herbal note to appear. Cinnamon warmth extends the experience long after everything else fades.
Summary: Flagship is a good quality whisky which is light and citrusy enough to work well as a summer malt. A nice, uncomplicated everyday sipper, although the price on the website feels a little high at £55 for a young whisky. However, it’s one that can be picked up cheaper elsewhere on occasion, so worth keeping an eye out for.
