Penderyn Ex-Rye Small Batch - 50%

From the distillery website

This whisky has been double distilled, before maturation in ex-rye casks from Jack Daniels, and is one of only 2050 bottles at 50% abv.

Nose: Perfume of green apples, vanilla, honey, butterscotch and sweet seasonal winter spices.
Taste: Sweet spices with nutmeg, baked apples and citrus peel; some cinnamon spice, peppers and a hint of ginger.
Finish: A fleeting finish but sweet cereal notes linger.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Pale gold, forms a thin line which beads before falling as medium-slow, thick lines.

Nose: Light vanilla, green apple skin, icing sugar, sweet caramel toffee.

Palate: Werther’s Original toffee, stewed apples with cinnamon and nutmeg, dried lemon peel, black pepper and ginger bring further spicy heat.

Finish: Short and spicy with a slight crispbread note.

Summary: A pleasant, light whisky, spicy and a little warm but not overpowering. Enjoyable on the palate, the combination of toffee, spiced apple and citrus work well together but the short finish is disappointing. Priced at £85, it may be a limited edition but, for me anyway, it just doesn’t offer enough to be value for money.
