Fettercairn Warehouse 2 Batch No. 003 - 50.6%

From the distillery

Distilled in 2015 and matured in a combination of handpicked ex-Bourbon barrels (57%), Rum barrels (16%) and French Red Wine barriques (27%) before bottling at 50.6% and limited to 9600 bottles.

A pre-release sample from a recent tasting session with Fettercairn Distillery and The Whisky Wire.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Deep gold, forms a thick oily line which beads before falling as slow, thick legs.

Nose: Lemon and orange peel, tropical fruit, stone fruit, vanilla, almonds, a hint of damp earth and cooling mint.

Palate: Rich butter caramel toffee, seared pineapple, coconut, citrus fruit and a little drying oak, whilst ginger adds warmth. A few drops of water bring out dark fruit and berry notes.

Finish: Long and lingering, tropical fruit, caramel and ginger gradually dissipate whilst a mocha note comes through right at the end.

Summary: Plenty of that typically tropical Fettercairn character, accentuated no doubt by the use of rum barrels, together with the addition of more dark fruit notes bringing complexity and depth. There’s a lot of thought gone into the make up of this whisky, and the attention to detail really shows. Non-chill filtered and bottled at 50.6% really allows the character to shine though.

These Warehouse 2 Collection bottlings tend to be very popular, and in this case it’s very easy to see why. With a price point of around £60 it’s not going to be around long.
