Cambus 33 - 42.5%

From the bottler

The Whisky Cellar is an Edinburgh-based independent Scotch Whisky bottler, selecting casks from its private stock at the peak of their character.

Bottled a parcel of several single casks at a time, each individual series under our ‘Private Cellars Selection’ label is studiously chosen to deliver a wide spectrum of natural colour, aroma and flavour.

“Unconstrained by age or statement of vintage, regionality or cask type… if our tasting panel love the whisky enough, we will bottle it.” – Keith Bonnington, Founder

Cambus is regarded by many as the benchmark for grain whisky and, at this old age of 33 years old, it is particularly attractive. Soft and silky sweet from two ‘sister’ casks - a delight to drink.

Only 487 bottles.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance:Yellow gold, forms a thick line which falls as slow, thin legs.

Nose: Sweet, lemon icing, vanilla pods, coconut cream and a hint of nuttiness.

Palate: Vanilla custard, lemon sponge cake, foam bananas, caramel toffee, hints of musty dunnage.

Finish: Button mushrooms, fried in butter on lightly buttered toast.

Summary: One of the strangest finishes of any whisky I’ve tried, and certainly the only time I’ve ever used button mushrooms as a tasting note, however there is something oddly satisfying about experiencing a transition from sweet fruit to musty dunnage. At a price of £150 it’s outside my price range but I’m certainly glad I tried it.

I always recommend reading more than one review of any whisky you’re looking to purchase, and in this case we were joined on the tasting session by a couple of the best reviewers I know. So don’t just take my word for it, check out Brian’s Malt Musings and Coldorak’s More Drams Less Drama for their thoughts.

Transparency: this sample pack was received free of charge for independent review. The author has no affiliation with the distillery, all opinions are my own and remain completely impartial.
