Brig o’ Perth 14 - 46.7%
Brig o’ Perth was originally produced in 1896 by Perth wine merchant Matthew Gloag & Sons in the basement of their family shop as their ‘house blend’. In recent years the whisky had only seen sporadic outings and, when the founder of The Whisky Cellar, Keith Bonnington left Edrington Distillers, he decided to buy the brand. This limited edition bottling was produced to celebrate the history and legacy of the Brig o’ Perth blend.
From the bottler
A 14 year old ‘Special Anniversary Blend’. The whisky was described as being ‘desirably smooth and mellow to the taste’ by The Lancet in 1897. We have produced this in the Old Highland style, with an uncommonly high malt content (>50%), largely ex-bourbon cask matured (refill and first fill) and using Ben Nevis and Blair Athol as our base malts.
Limited release of 1,125 bottles
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thin line, slowly developing into small beads before falling as slow, thin legs.
Nose: Demerara sugar, vanilla, stewed orchard fruits, orange and lemon citrus and cinnamon butter pastries.
Palate: Honey, brown sugar, new saddle leather, malt, Galia melon, sultanas and vanilla with cinnamon providing a little warmth.
Finish: Brown sugar, caramelised with a touch of charring, dried fruit, cinnamon, nutty oak and a faint hint of tobacco leaf.
Summary: Brig o’ Perth is a pleasant, easy drinking whisky with enough to keep the palate entertained. It’s light, and possesses enough fruity sweetness to make this a good choice as a summer whisky. Current retail price is £45, decent value for a 14 year old blend with this abv.
I always recommend reading more than one review of any whisky you’re looking to purchase, and in this case we were joined on the tasting session by a couple of the best reviewers I know. So don’t just take my word for it, check out Brian’s Malt Musings and Coldorak’s More Drams Less Drama for their thoughts.
