Cask Orkney 18 - 46% - AD Rattray

From the AD Rattray website

Cask Orkney is a limited edition 18 Year Old single malt scotch whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks. Created to celebrate the Neolithic folklore of Orkney, it captures the island spirit with a deeply engaging and perfectly balanced malt.

Colour: Olive gold
Nose: Subtle and soft, with green apple and nutmeg, wood spice, sea salt and a hazy smoke.
Palate: Toffee, peach and apricot, with a rich, velvety texture.
Finish: Nutty and dry on a lightly charred background.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Yellow gold with a slight green tinge, beads fall slowly as thick legs.

Nose: Slightly spicy, hints of cinnamon and sandalwood, Werther’s Original toffees and a faint whiff of smoke.

Palate:  Caramel, stewed stone fruit, Ovaltine maltiness and creaminess on the palate.

Finish:  Slightly drying with an oaky nuttiness, faint traces of soft peat smoke, crème brûlée lingers on the palate for an age. The faintest touch of spice right at the close.

Summary: Beautifully balanced with a soft, creamy mouthfeel. This feels a lot like a Highland Park, a whisky I often struggle with due to a note in the finish of the core range expressions I find unpleasant. However, I’ve had a few independent bottlings recently and that note seems to be absent, as is the case here. The result is a malt which is enjoyable, non chill filtered, natural colour, decent abv and, at a price of around £67, good value for an 18 year old whisky in the current market.
