Fettercairn 22 Year Old - 47%
From the distillery
Matured in 1st fill ex-bourbon American White Oak casks. Re-casked into specially selected distillery run bourbon barrels.
Nose: Banana, citrus fruit and plum, combines with raisin, fig and gingerbread.
Taste: Spiced pear, caramelised orange and coffee, tempered by liquorice that then makes way to morello cherry, plum and treacle.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Burnished gold, forms a thick line which falls as slow, thick legs.
Nose: Ripe banana, caramel, vanilla, tropical fruit and hints of citrus and rosewater.
Palate: Oily mouthfeel which coats the palate. Banoffee pie, mango, honey and warm pineapple, the rosewater from the nose giving rise to hints of Turkish Delight. A little ginger spice comes through late. A little water adds creaminess.
Finish: Spicy ginger finish, interlaced with banana, pineapple and caramel.
Summary: This is a good, solid malt whisky. It’s rich with a lovely mouthfeel however it does lack a little complexity for a 22 year old whisky, especially one which is pushing up towards the £200 mark. I would happily sit and drink this one, although I’m not convinced it does enough for me to buy a bottle.
This sample was part of a 5 dram tasting pack, purchased from The Spirits Embassy and used for a tasting session with Andrew Lennie, Brand Ambassador at Fettercairn Distillery.
