Fettercairn 12 Year Old PX (Travel Retail Exclusive) 40%
From the distillery
An initial maturation in ex-bourbon American White Oak casks Pedro Ximenez sherry casks are used to enhance Fettercairn's signature tropical fruit notes and add a layer of sweet complexity.
Nose: Vanilla and pear, with soft spices.
Taste: Peach, guava, and blood orange, with subtle liquorice. Hints of maple syrup and crème brûlée.
Appearance: Burnished gold, forms beads which gradually break to fall as slow, thin legs.
Nose: Honey, dried fruit, dried orange peel and maple syrup
Palate: Honey sweetness arrives early and is followed by maple syrup, tropical fruit, dried fruit, blood orange marmalade and stone fruit.
Finish: As the fruit notes subside they are joined with tobacco leaf and hints of black liquorice, followed by ginger spice.
Summary: A good quality malt where the tropical fruit of the Fettercairn spirit combines nicely with the PX cask finish without being overwhelmed. Whilst it’s a very pleasant, accessible whisky it does make you wonder how much better this could be if bottled at an abv higher than the current 40%.
This sample was part of a 5 dram tasting pack, purchased from The Spirits Embassy and used for a tasting session with Andrew Lennie, Brand Ambassador at Fettercairn Distillery.
