Arran Festival Single Cask 2021 - 46.3%
Non-chill filtered and natural colour, only 245 bottles were produced.
Sampled as part of a Limited Edition tasting session at the Lochranza Distillery.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Honey gold, viscous, forms a thick line which falls as slow, thick legs.
Nose: Light, fruity citrus, dried fruit, old oak.
Palate: Drying, sweet raisins and sultanas, dried lemon and orange peel, manuka honey, hazelnuts, old oak timber and a little peppery spice. Addition of a little water brings out more fruit but also adds to the astringency.
Finish: Long, nutty and dry.
Summary: Given the description I was expecting a sherry bomb but this really isn't the case. Despite a 24 year maturation the sherry notes aren't overpowering at all, allowing the fruity notes of the Arran spirit to come through. Unfortunately I found this whisky to be far too tannic for me, with the woody astringency being the most dominant aspect.
I'm a big fan of Arran, but for me this one was the least enjoyable of an excellent selection. However, if you like your whisky on the dry side, this may well be perfect for you.
