Glasgow 1770 Limited Edition Ruby Port Cask Finish - 56.2%
From the distillery website
Cask No. 17/808 - Ruby Port Cask Finish - Unpeated Single Malt Whisky? Only 467 individually numbered bottles, presented in a luxury display carton which is also individually numbered.
Double pot distilled using Concerto barley, this unpeated whisky was distilled on the 4th of July 2017 and initially filled into a first fill ex-bourbon cask. On the 26th of November 2020 the spirit was filled into a Portuguese Ruby Port Barrique, before being bottled at 56.2% ABV on the 29th of October 2021.
A wonderfully smooth and sweet single malt with fruity notes of strawberries, raspberries and fresh cream. The finish is long-lasting with sweet-spicy notes of pink peppercorns.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Deep rosé wine in colour, forms a narrow line, beads and falls very slowly as thin legs.
Nose: Strawberries and cream, raspberry fool, a slight waft of dark berries, coconut and vanilla.
Palate: The light fruity nose belies the youth and high abv, which becomes immediately evident when taken neat. Dark berried fruit takes centre stage together with vanilla pods and a little floral rosewater. A few drops of water really open this up, giving creamy strawberry and raspberry mousse together with a peppery warmth.
Finish: Fruity and warming, red berries stay on the palate as long as the peppery heat.
Summary: Although they can sometimes be a little hit and miss, I do tend to enjoy a port finished whisky. This one is different and delightful, it's light but still has great fruity depth. For me, it really responds to a few drops of water, bringing down the youthful alcohol burn and allowing creamy red berries to come through. It’s sweet but not cloyingly so, a real summer whisky. Another 50cl limited edition bottling but, like the other Glasgow 1770 bottlings, it does bring a lot to the table.
