Laphroaig 16 - Amazon exclusive
The peated whisky has been matured exclusively in ex-Bourbon barrels, and is described as having aromas of heather and roasted chestnuts, with flavours of caramel, Manuka honey, bergamot and a 'unique chilli mouthfeel’.
John Campbell, (ex-Laphroaig distillery manager) said: 'Laphroaig 16 Year Old is the perfect illustration of how our rich whiskies mellow as they mature.
Appearance: Pale straw colour, beads up before dropping as slow, thin legs.
Nose: Peat smoke, vanilla, hints of pecan and maple syrup Danish pastries.
Palate: The medicinal peat is there, but slightly toned down compared to the younger Laphroaig expressions, caramel, citrus fruit, honey, chilli heat and even a slightly floral, heather note. A little water mellows the heat, bringing more oakiness to the fore.
Finish: The medicinal nature of the smoke gradually fades to leave smouldering ash and a little maritime salinity.
Summary: One of the more disappointing expressions I've had from Laphroaig. I was hoping this one would compare well with it's slightly younger 15 year old occasional stable mate, but this feels like a poor relation.
It's decent enough as a standalone bottling, but in comparison to other Laphroaig expressions it feels a little lacking in complexity, richness and that signature peaty punch. At a lower price point this wouldn't be much of an issue as I've still enjoyed drinking it, but for the current price I do feel there are far better alternatives out there.
As mentioned, this is described as an Amazon exclusive and can be purchased here.
